I really like the idea of ‘Covenant Marriages’ but I think the way that it is currently designed, it will the attract more of the abusive and clingy individuals who seek out the ability to control others in relationships than normal couples.
I think in order to create normal individuals to participate in the “Covenant Marriage”, there should be some sort of tax incentive, such as up to 5K tax break. I know $5k seems like a lot of money, but in reality the state would be saving a lot more money in the long run by the benefits of encouraging long term marriage.
Actually scratch that, since the average marriage in this country is 25k, the tax break should be up to that. AND we shouldn’t have any taxes on items accrued for the marriage ceremony that is part of the “Covenant Marriage”.
Why should the state be encouraging individuals to participate in a religious sacrament by giving them a tax break? How is this different than getting $5k for a baptism?
Marriage is approved by our government already. Baptism is not.
Widely respected Jesuit theologian Cardinal Avery Dulles said that adherence to Humanae Vitae became a “litmus test” that trumped all other issues, which resulted in the exclusion of qualified theologians from teaching positions and the advancement of bishops of “debatable quality.” - from CFC
One of the things that has irked me the most among Christian leaders is this strange adherence to only one principle (anti-abortion) when choosing a political leader. There are so many other principles to live by written within the book of the Bible, why is abortion seen as a sin above all others?
It is no wonder why the Church has fallen.
